Off Roading

Get your kicks here at bighorn4x4.com. Whether it is off roading, 4WD or AWD we have it all, right here, right now. When you get out there, pushing your ride to the limit, you need to know how to handle it. If you go out in the wrong 4WD vehicle or do not know how to tackle the terrain: you could be in serious trouble.

When you go out off roading, tip number one is never to go alone. If you get stuck, you flip and you are in for a hard time. When you do venture off the main road, go prepared. A travel kit is absolutely essential. You could become stranded a long distance from the main road without cell service. The long hike back to civilization could be grueling and having a travel kit could save your life. Travel kits should be comprised of, at the very least, energy bars, water and a first aid kit.

Just as it is important to prepare yourself for the off roading experience, you need to prepare your vehicle too because out there, there are no AAA tow trucks or call boxes. Most of your 4WD maintenance will be common sense, such as changing the motor oil and filter every 5,000 miles. All the belts and hoses on your 4WD should be replaced every 50,000 miles. This should be done regardless of their condition. The 5,000-mile marker is an easy figure to remember when it comes to your vehicle maintenance.

The air filter of your AWD or 4WD needs to be closely monitored when you are off roading. The air filter can become very dusty in rough terrain. The same applies to all filters and all fluids: change them as soon as possible to avoid extensive damage to the vehicle.

Plan your route ahead of time. Off roading is a rush, but you need to be fully aware of where you are going and how to get out of there. You should also get your hands on maps of the local area and if you are using a GPS, learn how to read the longitude and latitude as well. Before you set off on your exploration, make sure all tires are correctly inflated, including the spares.
It is important that you know your vehicle intimately. You need to know its width and height. Just as you know how to navigate parking space with your regular vehicle, know the dimensions of your off roading one as well. When you know and understand it, you will be able to successfully navigate between overhanging trees and rocks.

We have a lot more advice on how to handle your vehicle, adventure preparation and how to understand your 4WD system. Off roading is fun and an amazing rush, to get the most out of it, read on to learn everything you need to know about the sport.
