Quads

Quad bikes are great recreational fun for some, essential business tools for others. There is no doubt that quads are a sizable investment and it is for this reason that many people choose to buy second-hand. But before you buy, you need to do your homework. The following information should help you make the right, informed choice.

First and foremost, check all the quads you are looking at very carefully! Many riders push these bikes way beyond their limitations while others simply avoid the necessary maintenance. First of all, look at the service record. Like all automobiles, quads need to have regular oil changes and servicing. Although the bike may look fine, it could have suffered neglect that cannot be easily spotted, so consult the service record.

The best way to test the quality of your potential quad is to take it for a drive. Be on the look out for smoking exhausts, this can suggest worn valves. Clattering noises can suggest that the camshaft or drive-chain may need to be replaced. Be sure to take the bike through all of its gears and make sure that the 4WD system still functions correctly.

Looking at the wheels will give you a firm indication if the bike has been abused or not. Look for damaged rims and check the tires for wear and tear. If the new tires are worn, this should not be a deal-breaker as new tires are relatively cheap.

The rear axle also needs to be checked, you should pay close attention to this because a rear axle is the most expensive part to replace. Look for leaks coming from the seals and check the oil as well; watery or muddy oil would suggest problems with the seals.

With regard to engine size, a 400cc size should be enough for most requirements. Some manufacturers of quads produce 600 and even 700cc engines. These engines will not work as hard as the smaller type, so they will stay cooler.
